But be aware, that when you get into things and you are trying to get that 'band sound' to make your music your own, a company like FXpansion that include an insane amount of high quality expansion packs, can really take your game higher.

So, by all means concentrate on the actual software that you need for realistic drums, but don't forget the sounds that come with it! Of course, all the major packages include stock content, and you can judge a lot on this. But anyway, I still ended up buying one of their bundles in a sale and got a massive amount of very high quality midi files that work not just in BFD, but also FPC, which is a dream to use with my MPD.

In fact, FXpansion introduced me to the concept of the advanced midi file via Groove Monkee I think it was who provided some free midi templates for them. I actually prefer using drum machines and 'beatz' for making a lot of my music, when in Dance Music Producer Extrordinaire mode, but for those times when it is necessary to mimic a real band/real drummer, BFD has got me covered and more. But if I don't have a go at people for 'not using the search function', then hopefully no one will have a go at me for answering a question asked, and answered, many times. I've also had very good experiences with the Drum Drops crew, who have a top class product, but are rarely seen spamming or shilling forums, so I like to just mention them now and again when this subject comes up.Īpologies for repeating myself (I've probably given my humble opinion on this ten times over). It's a great little system that seems to work very well. Oh, and don't forget the drummers doing what they do best: Drumming. Sample makers doing what they do best, making samples, coders doing what they do best, making cutting edge software, and companies that are established exploiting their market share to help distribute that quality content. Not sure about how it all works out or the politics of it all, but it seems like a pretty good set up. They do a super duper Kontakt version that looks pretty amazing too: I already have the very basic pack they do with just three articulations iirc and it is superb, coming with all kinds of formats from Impakt in S1 to a handful of others I can't remember at the moment. I've got my eye on the Drum Drops Rogers Kit for BFD, and even though I have *more* than enough sample packs to be getting on with, I think I'll wait for one of the annual sales that FXpansion have (they are distributing it)** and pick it up. YMMV.Īnd when you are talking 'real' drums, they are only ever as good as the samples (obviously).

They do get back to you within a day or two, and you usually know then whether you have a solvable or unsolvable problem.Īs for other solutions like EZ Drummer and what-have-you, I know others hold them in high regard, and they obviously put a lot of effort in and have a lot of happy customers, but to me, the software was just too polished, too final mix, too hard to shape and sculpt if it did not already 'fit' into a mix. Which is more than I can say for the majority of VST companies, where it has been consistently bad across the board. They don't make outlandish promises, they don't patronise you, hell, sometimes they'll even give you some customer support. But I decided against it after not such a great experience with their support, and truth be told, I have a certain amount of 'brand loyalty' to FXpansion as well - one of only a handful of companies I have this for, for software. Came bundled with S1, might have even checked out a demo as well. I don't have much experience with other packages, except for maybe EZ Drummer I think. For years people had been cheating at making music, and I didn't even know! Nowadays, there is no excuse. I soldiered on in ignorance that 'realistic' drum programs like this even existed, until one day the penny dropped. you need several, and several kits for each to be happy. No one drum VSTi, or even a kit with one of them will do. I can & do program a lot too, it tales a long time but I can work in whatever I need.

The randomness will come automatically, as I won't be hitting each trigger within the concentric ring pattern consistently. Two trigger pairs will be send to each of my drum trigger module for maximum articulation. I personally like Toontracks stuff, and I use a 4 trigger module set up with my expanded edrum kit with 40 something trigger pads, which is more than enough to trigger everything in the largest of VSTi drum kits.Īs for Hi-Hats & drum VSTi's, I've designed a custom 8 trigger zone Hi-Hat pad that I'll be putting together, each trigger being in a concentric ring pattern.

Each one has their plus & minuses, and no one is perfect, but like everything else, you can get so nit picky that 'perfect' is not good enough. Many of the above are very good, and it boils down to personal preference.
